Participation in the Emergency Department roster, inclusive of day, evening, night and weekend shifts.
To perform patient assessment and clinical examination of patients, both within the department, and occasionally in other hospital departments/inpatient units (eg Medical Emergency Team (MET) Calls at Coffs Harbour Health Campus and CERS response for Macksville District Hospital.
To perform necessary procedures for critical care patients within the scope of abilities and training, or under the supervision of Macksville FACEMs, the Network Director for Emergency Medicine Coffs Clinical Network (CCN) or nominee (ie Senior Medical Practitioner)
To be responsible to, and carry out the instructions of the Director of Emergency, Macksville, Director of Training Macksville, Network Director of Emergency Medicine, CCN or nominee at Coffs Harbour Health Campus or Macksville District Hospital.
To receive and provide detailed verbal handover between Medical Officers at the commencement and end of each shift.
To work within a multidisciplinary team, including liaison with referring Medical Practitioners and the arrangements for transfer of patients to tertiary institutions.
To maintain appropriate medical records, including electronic, to ensure effective communication; to facilitate service planning and to meet legal requirements.
Participate in the Critical Care retrieval roster as experience allows.
To participate in educational programs and to assist in the education of medical and nursing staff.
To participate in audit and quality assurance activities.
To comply with all legislative requirements under Occupational Health & Safety, Privacy Acts, and EEO and to conduct all activity in a professional and responsible manner.
Perform other duties not inconsistent with the Award, Agreement or Terms of Employment as may be directed or implied from time to time.
To supervise junior medical staff and students that rotate to the Emergency Department
To undertake activities in compliance with protocols, procedures and policies of the Emergency Department, Coffs Harbour Health Campus and Macksville District Hospital

This position is a 12 month CMO position for an ED trained physician to work 0.5 FTE at Coffs Harbour and 0.5 FTE at Macksville District Hospital.
Coffs Harbour and Macksville are on the north coast of NSW, midway between Sydney and Brisbane with daily access by air to all Australian capital cities and are within the Mid North Coast Local Health District. The area boasts superb beaches, mountain scenery, excellent facilities and a relaxed outdoor lifestyle.
Coffs Harbour’s purpose build ED has an annual caseload exceeding 36,000 (24% paediatric), an admission rate of 34% and services a population of >140,000. It has a 10 bed EMU and a dedicated fast-track area and is acknowledged as the busiest hospital for severe trauma in rural NSW.
Coffs Harbour’s Emergency Department is accredited with the Australian College for Emergency Medicine and has an active CME programme that all staff are encouraged to attend. There is also ready access to a brand new, state of the art, Simulation Centre. The ED has 7.2 FTE Staff Specialists in Emergency Medicine providing 16 hours clinical supervision of trainees daily. We currently have rotations available in Anaesthetics, ICU and Cardiology.
Coffs Harbour Health Campus is the closest major non-metropolitan hospital to Macksville District Hospital, a rural facility located 56 km south, an estimated driving time of 40 minutes.
Macksville District Hospital (MDH) is a level 34, 50 bed facility located in the Nambucca LGA. It provides inpatient acute services, birthing, emergency medicine services and day-only surgical services in the Mid North Coast Local Health District.
The town of Macksville is the centre of a rich rural district including oyster farming and fishing and is located on both the broad Nambucca River and the Pacific Highway. Macksville itself has a population of approximately 5000.
The catchment population is currently estimated at close to 22000. In 2006, 22.1% of the population aged over 65 years; 5.8% of the population at this time were identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and close to 20% of the population were women of child bearing age. Using SEIFA scores Nambucca is the third most disadvantaged LGA in the Mid North Coast Local Health District.
The Emergency Department sees approximately 13000 presentations annually with 48% of presentations comprising ATS 1-3. It is staffed by a single doctor, with three shifts overlapping over a 24 hour period.
Anaesthetic services are provided by GP Anaesthetists, who are also involved in the management of inpatient load and are on call for support of the emergency staff rostered above.
Basic laboratory services are available during the week from 0830 to 1600 with an on call service afterhours for urgent tests. Istat Troponin and electrolyte cards are available afterhours.
Similarly, radiology services are available during working hours and between 12 pm and 5 pm on a weekend. CT, MRI and US facilities are not available onsite, however an M Turbo Ultrasound machine is available to appropriately trained staff.
MBBS or equivalent.
Current unconditional and unlimited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
Minimum 4 years relevant post graduate experience in Emergency Department Medicine
Demonstrated current competency in: patient care for all triage categories, all ages; Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation; Airway Management; Early Management of Severe Trauma; head and spinal injuries; management of medical, surgical and obstetric emergencies; management of Paediatric emergency presentations; assessment and management of acute Psychiatric presentations.
Demonstrated ability to provide safe effective patient care, working independently and without direct supervision.
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and computer skills.
Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills
